Raised copper values are seen in inflammatory states and
with steroid hormone therapy.
Decreased copper values are seen with:
1. Decreased intake: restrictive diets, parenteral
nutrition, lack of absorption, (drugs such as zinc salts,
GIT and bariatric surgery, IBD)
2. Transport defects (hypoceruloplasminaemia, malnutrition,
nephrotic syndrome)
3. Rare anomalies such as Wilson or Menkes syndrome.
Note: in heterozygous carriers of genetic anomalies, copper
concentrations may be reduced or normal and should be
interpreted with urine copper and serum ceruloplasmin.
